An association between Graham Young and Johan Barnard was formed in March 1994 to initially carry out two major urban design projects for Johannesburg City Council. It brought together two individuals with complementary backgrounds in landscape architecture, environmental planning and urban design. In November 1994 the association was formalised and today Newtown Landscape Architects is involved with many landscape architecture and environmental planning projects. 

The members are Graham Young and Johan Barnard.

Graham is a registered landscape architect who holds a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Toronto. He has over 30 years experience in consulting and teaching landscape architecture in Africa and Canada where he gained valuable expertise in the practice of landscape, urban design and environmental planning. He is also a senior lecturer, teaching landscape architecture and urban design at post and under graduate levels, at the University of Pretoria. Graham has published widely on landscape architectural issues and has had projects published both locally and internationally in design journals and books. He also specializes in Visual Impact Assessments.

Johan holds degrees in landscape architecture and urban design. His contribution to the firm is landscape and urban design, specialising in construction detailing, tender and contract documentation, site supervision, cost and contract management. Johan manages our Johannesburg office and oversees operations.
