Moroko Park Precinct, Soweto
Project type: Regional Park
Client: City of Johannesburg
Landscape value: R 30,000,000
Project description: The vision established for the park by the community was to create a beautiful and safe place for the people of Moroka. The focus of the development was around ecological and social sustainability, community upliftment and landscape rehabilitation. The development area amounted to approximately 20 hectares. The area around Moroka Dam was designed to function primarily as a ‘neighbourhood park’ with facilities that encourage socialising and picnicking. The park is easy to access, well connected to the surrounding community and is visible from the street and the surrounding residences. Thokaza Park downstream of the dam, functions both as a neighbourhood park as well as a regional park and connect to the adjacent Regina Mundi Park of Remembrance. The Institute of Landscape Architects of South Africa gave the park a Merit Award in 2005 and in 2002 it was a ‘show project’ at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
