Project type: Regional Park - Framework
Client: Johannesburg City Parks
Project description: The ultimate goal of the Riverpark Urban Design Framework is to spatially integrate the integration of development opportuni¬ties with those of community concern for a public park. The main feature of the public park is the Central Axis that links the existing Field and Study Centre with the information kiosk/ ablutions, amphitheatre and the urban piazza area, which is ultimately the link to public transport and the street system. This axis will act as an activity node and an ideal area for vendors or flea market stalls. Connected to the central axis is a children’s play area, a constructed wetland system and off-stream water bodies which will add to ambiance and sense of place of the park. Secondary activities will include horse stables, a heritage precinct and an events centre for quieter activities like educational talks. Large areas of lawn have been provided for the existing markets and exhibitions that take place within the park. The park forms part of a greater network of open space within the cityscape. This very important notion of green way links, that not only has ecological value but also recreational (by means of the mountain biking and horse trail), is not be forgotten or underestimated in the framework proposal. The overall design intent is to ultimately create a diverse park that can easily be accessed by a variety of users and can accommodate a vibrant number of activities and events.
