Klipriviersberg Master Plan

Project type: Site master planning

Client: Johannesburg City Parks

Project value: R 1,500,000 Phase 1

Project description: The KNR proclaims the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve on the Northern side (proclaimed) and the associated public open space towards the south. The aim of the master plan was to promote the conservation of the area’s natural and cultural assets, enhance educational and recreational value as well as generate revenue for its maintenance. The following activities were to be included:

  • Entrance precinct
  • Batswana cultural village
  • Enviro centre
  • Heritage precinct
  • An off stream wetland
  • Picnic areas
  • Tented camp
  • Rustic camp
  • Walking trails
  • Panoramic viewing point

Existing activities were taken into account during the master plan design and were incorporated during the master planning process. Other activities were situated to their strategic advantage and to encourage their integration. Nemai were commissioned to do the ecological sensitive survey. These locations, such as the Stone Age and Iron Age Batswana ruins should be avoided as far as development goes. The overarching conceptualization of the KNR is derived from an approach which put ecology and social concerns together.

Part of the NLA‘s brief was to recommend an entrance to the reserve that will act as the main entrance point as well as a variety of different uses. The main entrance layout is designed to include feature planting on a natural stone wall backdrop. It then opens up towards the north into an indigenous garden area that allows for resting and picnicking.
