Project type: FIFA World Cup Stadium Sport Complex
Client: Polokwane Municipality
Project value: R 13,000,000
Project description: This project is the construction of the new Peter Mokaba Stadium to a World Class African Sports Stadium Complex in preparation of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. The new 45,000 seat stadium will have 500-seat VIP area with its own entrance, seats for 1 675 media representatives, 200 TV positions, an 800-m² VIP reception area and lounge, offices and storage areas, and parking for both players and officials. In this prestigious complex, the first of its kind in the entire province of Limpopo, The Peter Mokaba Stadium will be home to local soccer teams as well as facilitate a wide range of South African sport competitions including rugby.
The landscape design considers the rich landscape of the surrounding area and includes only indigenous species to the area such as Acacias and various colourful Aloe species. The paving for the spectator walkways has a tinge of the rainbow nation of South Africa in making use of a range of coloured pavers to brighten the mood of all supporters, non-supporters, of winners and losers alike.
As is the requirement for all 2010 soccer stadiums, the pitch was successfully designed to comply with the FIFA specification while taking into account budget limitations as well as future maintenance constrains. In addition an automated irrigation system with a dedicated pump station and variable speed drive was designed to pump irrigation water from a storage tank that will catch all excess run-off water from the pitch.
